YOUTH AT THE HEART OF THE 2030 AGENDA:
THE CASE FOR SPACE

30 November - 2 December 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand

We're bringing together young leaders, youth related regional institutions, civil society and experts from Asia-Pacific. We are focusing on core challenges of online civic space, as well as practical solutions and considerations for action. Speakers will include young researchers, activists and practitioners, civil society and development organisations, governance experts and country representatives.

What was discussed at the #Case4Space roundtable (30 November-2 December 2016)?

The agenda included both plenary sessions focusing on core challenges, as well as breakout sessions to explore practical solutions and considerations for action. Read more: http://www.case4space.org/agenda.html.

Who participated in this event?
The event brought together over 250 young activists, civil society and development organizations, private sector and foundations’ representatives and UN country representatives from almost 30 countries in Asia and the Pacific.

The participation of young people from the entire region was funded by the co-conveners, and included:
  • 15 young people supported by UNDP selected through a Call for Stories, which received a total of 150 stories, blogs, videos and art performances. Read more: http://www.case4space.org/meet-the-winners.html.
  • 12 young journalists supported by UNESCO who received on-site mentoring by media professionals, and contributed to cover the event through newsroom and feature journalism. Read more: http://www.case4space.org/meet-the-journalists.html.
  • Numerous young marginalized people supported by UNFPA.
  • 12 young human rights defenders supported by FORUM-ASIA.
  • And many young persons from across Asia and the Pacific.
Speakers included young researchers, activists and practitioners, civil society and development organizations, governance experts and country representatives. See the list of speakers here: http://www.case4space.org/speakers.html.

What are the outputs of the event?
With a strong focus on foresight and scenario planning, this roundtable laid the groundwork for longer-term regional engagement by UNDP and other partners to create an enabling environment for youth to engage with the SDGs. More specifically:
  • Research findings were shared to identify the conditions that enable or hinder youth participation.
  • Innovative programmes were presented to provide examples of initiatives that enhance enabling conditions.
  • Collaboration between young people and a wide range of stakeholders involved in (or supporting) governance, civic engagement and participation across the region was fostered.
  • Elements (strategy and key outcomes, outputs, activities) for a regional initiative to support civil society, governments and youth engagement were identified.
