Samira Hassan, Singapore

Born to Bangladeshi immigrant parents, Samira was born and raised in Singapore. Her background gave rise to her interest and concern in the often-marginalized migrant communities in her country. She has worked with Foreign Domestic Workers, as well as migrant workers, helping them better integrate into society through English lessons. Samira is also currently a member of Community Advocates, a student-run advocacy group in her school. The group aims to raise awareness for pertinent social issues in Singapore amongst the school community. The group holds events and initiatives around the school – the latest one being ‘Advofeste’ through which exhibitions and social experiments were conducted to inform and educate the school community about issues concerning the underprivileged, mentally ill and the migrant community. Besides migrant communities, Samira is also passionate about women’s rights and she volunteers at a women’s crisis centre to tutor children. In her spare time, Samira enjoys participating in Model United Nations, watching films and knitting.
